Three STARS students have recently returned to their PhD research following time away working in policy placements. The students; Emily Dowdeswell, Jasmine Burr-Hersey and Hannah Cooper have been working with Defra in the Chief Scientific Advisor’s office, with the Plant Health Evidence and Tree Health Policy team and in the Library of the House of Lords, respectively. They have all enjoyed their experiences working in these exciting and challenging roles and have been very much praised for their valuable input.
In these win win placements the host organisations have benefitted from the work of the students giving feedback such as “…STARS placement student was able to take forward key pieces of work relating to evidence policy and science communication”, “a tremendous asset to the team” and “The three month student placement has been absolutely brilliant”. The students have reported how enjoyable and useful the placements have been, enabling them see research being applied to real life situations and experience working with a wide range of people.
Having established such good relationships with the hosts, we are hoping to be able to arrange further placements like this in the future.
